You see, meme makers have been making money over the last few years. Companies and websites request memes that reflect the brand in question and they get paid for having fun basically. But one guy is creating memes to generate some serious buzz around up and coming rappers.
Thing is, this was one of the industries’ best-kept secrets. It wasn’t really news that meme makers were being hired to created buzz around new rappers. But Ka5sh confessed everything during an interview with NBC News and, well, he might have ruined his easy income.
About his meme gig, Ka5sh said, “Let’s say Interscope wants me to make a pack of memes for a release for a certain rapper.” (It’s not “let’s say,” basically it’s exactly what’s happening.) “They want everyone to think that rapper has a lot of buzz around them and that other people are making memes about them, but it’s really just me making a whole bunch of them and then they’re being dispersed throughout different accounts.” Interesting.
And why does this need to happen? Well, it seems that being an internet darling is important these days. Cue in the number of likes on Instagram and your YouTube hits. It seems that there is too much distraction out there. There are too many people who want our attention.
Having to find out if someone is worth our time seems like a nuisance these days. The person has to prove that they’re worth our time. Accordingly, having buzz around that person helps in generating interest in the rapper, in this case.
There are others, of course. Rappers like Kamaiyah, Mike WiLL Made-it and Rae Sremmurd. This revelation could come as a shock to the people of Interscope who wanted to keep this as a secret. But, it comes as a shock to us too and it leaves us with a couple of questions.
Or this one. On another note, are you bouncing off your desk chair yet? Are you dreaming of quitting your day job to become a professional meme maker? Before doing anything, remember, you would have to explain what you do to your parents. That could take forever.
