Andy Pugliano is a high school kid from Fargo. With prom approaching, he wanted to take one special girl as his date.
This is Taya, the girl he wished to take to prom. But he didn't think he had a chance.
Recently, Andy and Taya had this exchange. It appears to be a conversation between two friends joking around. Or is it serious?
It may or may not have started as a joke, but Andy took it seriously. He posted this tweet in the hopes that it would get the 3,000 retweets necessary for her to agree to go to prom with him.
Some people responded by asking why he would want to date a girl who's not really into him. Certainly a fair question.
Others criticized Taya for making Andy go to this much trouble. But maybe they missed the part where this was Andy's idea, not hers.
A mutual friend posted this exchange that Taya had with her mom. Apparently, the retweets were coming fast, and Taya was having second thoughts.
Their mutual friend also posted this photo of Taya's reaction to the magic 3,000 number fast approaching. Looks like she's not that interested in prom, regardless of how viral the tweet is.
Andy wound up getting over 3,500 retweets, more than meeting his goal. But Taya still said no...possibly because she didn't think he was serious to begin with.
In response, many people again encouraged Andy to seek a girl who actually likes him. Going to prom with someone who's miserable the whole time probably wouldn't be that enjoyable.
However, there was still a lot of backlash against Taya for not agreeing to the date. And that kind of backlash can be a lot for anybody, especially for someone still in high school.
The response on Twitter is probably what led this to happen. Taya apparently deleted her Twitter account, at least temporarily.
Still, the lesson for Andy should be that you can't win someone as a prize for getting retweets. But maybe if he stops selling himself short, he'll end up doing just fine.
