Why would you tip your sever when they are also getting paid by the restaurant? I'll tell you why. Because they are lucky if they are getting even close to minimum wage. They rely on tips, so tip them you idiot.
2. Because Other People Probably Tipped Them Enough
Oh sure, others probably already tipped them so you should get a free pass? I don't like so. If everyone thought that way then your server wouldn't get tipped at all. Just do the right thing and throw down your 20%. If you can't afford to leave the tip you shouldn't be eating out at all.
There are two possible reasons as to why your food took too long. One is that the kitchen messed up and had to remake your food or never fired it at all. The other is that your server forgot to ring in your order. You can't be sure why your food was late and it doesn't really matter anyway.
The service was terrible because your server had more tables than just your table. They were running around like a chicken with their head cut off because the kitchen was out of certain menu items, the system to put in the orders went down and they had to find a manager to get change for another customer. They ran out of spoons, the kitchen ran out of filets, they had to pee, they are covering a shift for a friend and they are sick and exhausted and they weren't even supposed to be working today so just give them a break!
They forget to get you your ranch for all the reasons mentioned before. Also, you could have just asked again. You shouldn't be taking money away from them because they forget to bring you your basic, fattening lamo dressing that you could have politely reminded them to get for you.
First of all, everyone should be required to wait tables at some time in their life. If you have ever waited tables then you know that it is extremely difficult. Scientists have even said that it is more stressful to be a server than to be a neurosurgeon.
Being a server is so fun that it drives those in the industry to drink. Sometimes they even have to drink on the job so they can deal with the idiots they have to wait on. Then they drink after work to calm their nerves which leads to them coming to work hungover the next day. And we all know that being hungover at work is never fun. Yea, there is nothing fun about being a server. Please don't skip the tip.
Look, they may not have to work early in the morning, but they often work late nights. They also work weekends and every shift is at a different time. They work doubles and stand on their feet for hours so stop being cheap and take care of them.
They may not be stuck sitting at a desk all day but they are stuck doing dirty work. Dirty work like cleaning up after messy adults and kids and dealing with slosh buckets and washing dishes. Oh, and cleaning floors after people spill their drinks and dealing with half eaten old food. It's all gross.
10. Because All They Have To Do Is Bring People Food
There is this thing called side work. So, after a server is done waiting all their tables and all the morons at those tables they have to stay longer to clean, set up tables, roll silverware and refill sugar caddies. Basically all things stupid and tedious and stupid.
Sure a lot of restaurants offer a family meal during a break or before a shift, but it is usually slop. Restaurants feed their employees left overs and things that are about to rot. It isn't fine dining, people.
Do you think that servers just wait on awesome people all day? Well, what about the all the dudes that your female server has to wait on that hit on her. They give her eyes and are too touchy and make her uncomfortable in her place of work and she can't do anything about it because the customer is always right. Yea, that is a lot of fun!
Or how about when she is just about to walk out the door and it is 1 minute until close and 10 people walk in. They insist that they still have a minute left until closing time and all they want is appetizers, entrees, drinks, desserts and 10 separate checks. Yeah those people are awesome too!
Or how about the people who make up their own meals and order completely off the menu? They substitute everything and tell you that they are allergic to pretty much everything but the table. Yea those people are are the best!
15. Because This Is What They Chose To Do With Their Lives
Maybe they did chose to be a server, but why does that mean you can't tip them? Also, maybe they are waiting tables to pay their way through school? Or they are working towards a dream? It's not your job to decide how much money they should make. Just take care of them. There is a special place in hell for people who don't tip their servers.
