Over the years, there have been some pretty entertaining fan theories going around online. Some people have a way of twisting celebrity stories, movies, or whatever else is out there into a mind-blowing theory. We are entertained people, so keep them coming.
Let’s start with where these two women come from. Both have similar backstories. “Diana is from Themyscira, a small Amazonian island, and Moana is from Motunui, a small Hawaiian island, and neither character has ever left their respective homes.”
“Diana is the daughter of Zeus (the King of the Greek gods) and the Queen of Themyscira.” On the other hand, “Moana is the daughter of Motunui's king and queen.” These females are princesses but neither is waiting in a castle to be saved.
There’s more, so brace yourself. You see, the theory also points out the fact that both women feel they’re not reaching their full potential. “Each character [feels] a bigger sense of purpose for herself.”
Despite the ambition, both females are stopped by their parents. Both Diana and Moana are resisted and stopped by their parents from leaving their respective islands. (Side note: Even their names rhyme: Diana — Moana, Diana — Moana, Diana... alright, not exactly, but you get the point.)
Moreover, both the aunt and the grandmother die unexpectedly. Diana and Moana are left without their allies. However, both women find the courage to pursue that which their ally had encouraged them to do.
Both women leave the island. Both “travel great distances by sea with their male sidekicks, Steve Trevor and Maui.” Also, both men “end up sacrificing themselves in efforts to help the women be successful in their fights.”
